Distraction-free reading by going text-only?

If cognitive load is required to parse the “thousand words” that is in images, then, to create a pure and distraction-free reading experience should we keep the images to last? Having it as the title image imprints itself into the readers’ brains, which persists through the reading. Unideal for most unintended scenarios.
